    Raymond Berry, Kanock’s Pond

Virginia artist Raymond Berry spends many of his days outside with his easel and paints capturing the nuances of nature and atmosphere. Painting directly, irrespective of the weather, Ray is out at a favored location investigating the sensations of the moment in these expressive landscapes that honor the location and season while simultaneously abstracting it into a reverie of the place.

Berry is a masterful painter with an unmistakable style. His brushwork is confident but also curious and questioning. The painting surface mostly reveals a process that requires speed and later slow deliberation that allows the softness of the finished painting. Tonalist in quality, his paintings impart quiet rhythms and inflections, a no-nonsense romance of nature and vibrating formalism. Here, paintings function as visual poetry, luring viewers inward, into the picture plane, into the transformative emotions of place, and into their wanderer selves.

Chroma gallery is attended on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00. Appointments can also be made by contacting Deborah at artlab@chromaprojects.com.
