“My primary focus has always been hue and paint quality,” says J.M. Henry. “Earlier, when my paintings were nearly always abstractions derived from a definite source or image, that source was merely a starting point in a process that was ultimately an exploration of paint. My interest in – and tendency toward – minimal, or color-field painting is long standing. I have found that the beauty and unique qualities of newly available colors and materials sufficiently intriguing that I now want to largely forego the imagery and let the materials and process become the focus.

“I work serially because I love the experimental nature of this process, and I enjoy comparing and contrasting the results. These paintings have shifts and nuances that change with the light and as you move around them. They will wink at you. Purity refers to the unique aesthetic experience that the observant viewer may find when what at first glance appears to be just a small blanket of color becomes something alive.”
