Ninni Baeckstrom and Brigitte Turquois Freeman
      Speaking through Clay and Paint
      .

      Ninni Baeckstrom – stoneware
Ninni Baeckstrom grew up in Sweden and has been part of the Charlottesville arts community the past 30 years, teaching and exhibiting her sculptures and mosaics.  Her public art sculptures, purchased by the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle are installed in the area and her art can be found at institutions and private collections in the US and Europe.

Ninni’s art explores the human experience and organic form. “Seeing a twisted torso or the outline of a mountain ridge inspires me and grows into a sculpture or a mosaic.”

      Brigitte Turquois Freeman – oil

As an artist from rural France, Brigitte’s work draws deeply from the experiences and memories of her youth, capturing the quiet beauty and complex emotions of her upbringing. Through organic and geometric still-lifes and portraits in oil paint, she explores themes of self, grief, and nostalgia. Each brushstroke is an exploration of the passage of time, the intersection of personal history, and the natural world that shaped her.

A group exhibition featuring artwork from our 2024–2025 Incubator residents at McGuffey.

The Incubator Studio Program began ten years ago as a way to give emerging artists a place to grow their studio practice. Members are selected through an application process and are given affordable space for one year. During that time, Incubator artists gain experience by working within McGuffey Art Center, sharing skills, collaborating on projects, and engaging in studio time.

      Blake Hurt
      People in Rooms

This collection of recent works by Blake Hurt is the result of experiments in effectively seeing and painting the landscapes of room interiors and their occupants. The sharper contrasts, the mental overlay of the viewers’ expectations of the familiar and the radical distortions of indirect lighting of these images emphasizes the required different sensibility than that of traditional landscapes. These paintings should thus be regarded as an interim report of that new direction

Shepard’s pine resin sculptures are made from the resinous remains of fallen and decayed pine trees that he transforms into unique sculptures.
