Scott Smith’s black and white, and subtly pigmented photographs are observances of the phenomena available in the physical world: things, places and surfaces that fascinate and summon, altered through carefully controlled, or sometimes fortuitously captured, light and shadow. says Chroma Projects director Deborah McLeod.
Smith considers the imagery he conveys to be in fact sculpted by light. Ephemeral qualities are manipulated, emphasized, magnified; transformed into architecture or mappings, to indicate other realizations lurking in such commonplace materials as paper, ice or the terrestrial markings on earth and stone. These materials morph into alluring if somewhat disorienting spatial compositions that the artist intends to hold more suggestion than description.
