      Frederick Crist
The Pedestal Project – an exhibition of sculpture and photographs

      Sculpture: hot worked steel

      Photography: digital imagery

Sculpture relating to the figure and the figure relating to the sculpture. An abstract relationship.

      In the artist’s words:

“In my work, one idea spawns another which begets another. I only need to follow the unending path with my eyes open to see the multiple branches that occur. Then I pursue those ideas at the same time.

The Pedestal Project began in such a way – first with photographs of models sitting on or around a pedestal –  a nod towards classical figurative sculpture as a jumping-off point. Then, considering abstract sculpture made of paper presented on pedestals still as a photographic process (as the paper sculptures could not support themselves) but still an idea worth creating. Last are two abstract series of sculptures, one incorporating the pedestal as part of the whole, which speaks to line, form, and gesture, and the other sitting on a white pedestal speaking to gesture, line, and form in another variation.

There is a direct correlation to Chaos Theory in my work. You can go down the same path multiple times but each time it will be different. You will have a new awareness of previous events and the ability to ask – What if?
