October/November exhibitions and First Friday Reception
      Friday, October 4, 5:30 – 7:30 PM

      Smith Gallery

      October 4 – November 17
      Russell Richards: Bodies of Work

An exhibit of large-format photographs of body paintings, including selections from an ongoing science fiction NSFWar of the Worlds series (that was recently exhibited at the Erotic Heritage Museum in Las Vegas), my “Flower” series, and various other body painting projects.

      In the artist’s words:

Body painting is the world’s oldest art form, yet it is rarely acknowledged as fine art. Because they are ephemeral, I design my body paintings with an ultimate photograph in mind. Many of my photographs are composites of multiple images. Like old-school practical effects in a movie, “live action” elements are shot on location, miniatures are photographed against a greenscreen, and all are assembled in Photoshop. No AI is used in the creation of these images.

Carolyn Capps: Vastly Empty and Infinitely Full: A Portrait of the Ocean

An exhibition of paintings exploring the idea of complexity as it relates to the ocean.

      In the artist’s words:

Our lives, even those living far from a shore, are intricately entwined with the ocean web. In many ways we have abused our relationship with the ocean- overfishing, carbon emissions, oil spills…but there is also an underlying visceral quality to that relationship. The sea draws us to its shores. It is a source of solace to many. That solace comes from the sea’s ability to pull us, as it does its own ocean spray, back to completeness- reminding us we are part of a much larger whole.

      2nd Floor Gallery North

October 4 – November 17

David Borszich: Fragments Beneath: The Drift of Time and Tech

A mixed media exhibition that  delves into our relationship with outdated technology and our environment. David’s work reflects on themes of entropy and the inevitable decline of all things, and also serves as a subtle commentary on the impact of humanity’s quest for progress.

      2nd Floor Gallery South
      October 4 – November 17
      Heather Owens: House Party

Heather’s mixed media works explore the chaos, joy, and hardships of being a full-time caregiver. With House Party, she seeks the joy and irony in being a stay-at-home parent, finding celebration in the mundane, and embracing the disorder in all its exuberance and despair.

      Associate Gallery
      October 4 – November 17
      Landscapes

The McGuffey Association currently hosts over 100 associate artist members. Associate artists have been made members through McGuffey’s biannual jurying process and maintain studios outside of McGuffey Art Center. They participate in the Art Center’s community through solo and group exhibitions and community outreach/engagement.
