We Have Winning Essays by Susan Shafarzek

The annual contest is a big event here at Streetlight‘s essay/memoir section. We never know what our invitation is going to bring, but it’s always interesting. This year we’ve been especially fortunate.

Our first prize winner is Christopher Ghattas. His brilliant essay, “Final Thoughts,” is at once a narrative, a reaction, and a meditation, full of sharp wisdom and surprising humor.

Our second prize winner, Ruth Knesevich, takes her inspiration “From a Persian Kitchen.” In an essay both culinary and emotional, she brings us the essence of a rich culture. It’s a culinary delight.

Third prize goes to “Combined Training.” Here, Amelia Zahm, in a complex account, retraces a life and a grief in a way that’s both heartbreaking and beautiful.

We also have four honorable mentions. These  go to  MJE Chubb for “A Very Ordinary Day,” Tutt Stapp-McKiernan for “Talking to Toads,” Mary Truvalik for “The Second Christmas,” and Martha Wiseman for “Living By Water.”

The prize-winning essays will appear in our summer quarter, 2025. Honorable mentions will follow in the fall. We’re very grateful to all who took part, and, of course, especially to this year’s winners.

  1. Congratulations to all. I am disappointed that The Power of Eyebrow Pencil didn’t receive recognition but that just encourages me to keep trying. Never give up is my motto.
Keep up the great work, everyone.
